Edison's Birthday Story

On Friday, June 25, we arrived at the hospital around 7:00am to be induced. I was exactly 39 weeks along and so ready to be done being pregnant. Even though I'm only 29 (30 on July 10th!) each pregnancy has gotten harder and harder on my body. I think I'm just getting too old for this kind of stuff! After getting checked in we met our awesome nurse. Her name was Billi and we just loved her. She had an incredible sense of humor which was good given the fact that she was assigned us as patients. Around 9:00am the nurse checked me and I was 4cm dilated.  Dr. D showed up shortly after that and broke my water, well at least we thought she had.
Usually as soon as my water breaks contractions start hard and fast. But this time we waited, and waited and nothing really happened. I did start to contract occasionally but nothing productive. So around 11:00am pitocin was started. Then the contractions really started. They were coming about every 3 minutes and they hurt. When the nurse checked me again she could still feel the amniotic sac instead of the baby's head. When Dr. D came back around 1:15pm I was 6cm but we decided to wait to break my water (again) since she had to get over to St. Francis for a c-section. About 15-20 minutes after she left the nurse called and told her that she didn't think I was going to make it until after she got back, so Dr. D headed back over. When she came in she tried to break my water, but she couldn't feel any sac. I was still only 6cm, but 7-8 when she had me push. I was exhausted by this point. I just wanted this whole thing to be over, but nothing seemed to be happening...at least not fast enough for me. Plus, the contractions were every 1-2 minutes and excruciatingly painful. So I broke down and asked for an epidural. I figured that it could be another few hours for all I knew and I was done suffering! Now, out of my 5 previous kids, I'd only had an epidural with Sterling. All the other's I've done with no pain medication. So I knew I could do it, but I didn't care anymore. Dr. D told the nurse to order the epidural. Billi told us later that she was really surprised since she didn't think that I'd have time to get it, but she did as instructed. Turned out, Billi was right. Within 15 minutes of calling to get stuff together for the epidural I needed to push. Dr. D. said "All right" and turned to check me, only to find that the baby was crowning. I will never forget her jumping up off the end of the bed (which hadn't even been broken down for delivery) and running over to get gowned and gloved. I remember her yelling, "Whoa, whoa! Wait! Let me at least get on one glove!". When she came back over she told me to push, but I just couldn't do anything.
I was so tired I couldn't even lift my legs up. That's when Dr. D said, "I can't get this baby out without you". I just looked at her, but finally managed to get enough energy for one more push and out came Edison, followed by a huge gush of water and Dr. D saying, "It's a boy!"! He was born at 2:07pm, just a little more than 3 hours after active labor began. In all it took 3 pushes to get out our 9lb 2oz little boy, which is 2 more than I normally do (I know, poor me huh?)  ;-) And much to our surprise he even had hair! We have never had a baby with hair and little Eddie has plenty of it! I was so relieved and happy to have my little guy here and we are just loving having him at home. We are so grateful that he has finally arrived and that he is a healthy baby boy!

S'mores, Soccer and Fireflies

After dinner today, we invited the cousins to come over for some fun. We broke out the chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers and made some yummy, gooey, messy s'mores. My preferred method is to burn the marshmallows to a crisp, and while still burning lay them on top of the chocolate and graham cracker so the chocolate melts. They were so good! Although, not everyone prefers them that way. My nephew Jake likes his lightly browned, which takes a lot of time and careful cooking. We burned 2 sets before we finally got his right.
Kai Kai LOVED hers.
Look at that MESSY face!!

After s'mores the kiddos all ran around and just played, enjoying their time with their cousins.

After playing for a while the First Annual Father's Day World Cup Game began. I'm not sure what the teams were except that Rob and John were on the same team. It was a captivating and intense game! Goals were made, fights broken up and finally it was over! And the winner was....Uhhh, well we didn't keep score so who knows. I guess the real winners were Clara and I since the kids were entertained and we got to talk (mostly) uninterrupted for the duration of the game.

Finally to celebrate the success of the game the kids ran around the yard entrapping poor harmless lightening bugs. Each time one was caught it was proudly shown off to the adults who acted appropriately amazed at the kiddos ingenuity. Kailyn though had the most creative way to catch a lightening bug...she put it in her mouth. After which, deciding that it didn't taste so great, she promptly spit it out. Overall a fun evening with the cousins. I love that my kids have the chance to live so close to them and spend time with them, making memories that, hopefully, they will carry through the years!

P.S. HAPPY FATHER'S DAY ROB AND JOHN!!! HOPE YOU HAD FUN!

A "Weighty" Conversation Overheard

Rob decided that today he was going to get out the scale and weigh each of the kiddos to see how big they were. Here are the results:

Sterling: 68 lbs
Emmy: 51 lbs
Joe: 63 lbs
Cori: 51 lbs

Following this weigh in Rob and I overheard a conversation between Sterling and Emmy:

S: Me, you and Cori are the skinny ones.
E: Yeah, I'm the skinniest one.
S: Me and you and Cori get our skinniness from Dad and Joe gets his fatness from Mom!

Rob and I just started cracking up! Hey, you can't fault them for being honest I guess. Rob did take Sterling aside and explain that what he said could be hurtful and that maybe he shouldn't say it. So I got an apology out of it. Note to Self: After baby gets here, lose weight! ;-) Good thing I don't get offended!

Our Kansas City Getaway

This past weekend Rob and I made a little getaway to KC. A couple times a year Rob enters a half marathon in KC (one in June, one in Oct) and we make a weekend of it. We don't really DO much while we're there, but it's nice to have some alone time without any kids to bug us. And I mean bug in the nicest way possible! ;-) On the way up Rob and I had a very interesting and enlightening conversation. It went something like this:

Me: I don't get it. Why do you like to do things that make you uncomfortable like running. I mean, you get hot, sweaty and can't breathe. Why put yourself through that kind of torture?

R: Well, why do you like to get pregnant and have babies? You always tell me that's uncomfortable.

Me: Well, it is, but then you have a really awesome reward at the end...a baby

R: I've got three words for you...Finisher Flip-Flops.

Me: ????

R: Everyone who finishes the half marathon gets a pair of finisher flip-flops

Me: But you can buy flip-flops for less than the entry fee...

R: But those aren't FINISHER flip-flops.

Me: Ok, but see a baby is much better than a pair of flip-flops. It's worth the pain.

R: But you can throw a pair of flip-flops up in the air and if you don't catch them, it's not a problem. Try that with a baby. And you can leave them alone for long periods of time without getting arrested.

Me: Uhhh...

R: Plus if you have to walk across a bunch of shattered glass you can just stick on a pair of flip-flops and you're fine. If you strap a pair of babies to your feet and try to do it, it's not gonna turn out so good.

And that is why Rob runs half marathons I guess. It's all for the flip-flops. I can't say that I agree with his logic, personally I still like babies better than flip-flops, but he does have some valid points...

After getting to KC we went to crown center to pick up Rob's race packet and then walked around for a bit, got a snack and headed to the hotel. After we checked in and relaxed we decided to go and get some snacks and dinner. As part of his pre-race ritual we stopped at subway and got two footlongs for dinner. We spent the evening watching TV and doing nothing which is a big change from our life at home. No one calling us, or fighting with eachother, no cleaning, just Rob, me and the TV! Rob of course was up bright and early to get ready for his run. I don't go down to the course and cheer for him or meet him at the finish line. That's not my style. I, being the ever so supportive wife that I am, stayed in bed in the hotel room and slept. Running is his thing, not mine. Mine is sleeping. So really it's a win-win situation. He gets to run, I get to sleep and we're both happy. Seriously, if he cared and wanted me there, I'd do it, but it really doesn't matter to him. I stayed at the hotel, ate breakfast, went back to sleep for another hour or so, went back down and had a second breakfast (I am pregnant you know) and greeted Rob when he walked into the hotel all stinky and sweaty. He didn't run his best, but given that he just got back to running after breaking his ankle and that it was hot and humid out, he was happy just to finish. Way to go Babe! I'm proud of you! And it was a nice little (maybe too little?) break from life.

A Cereal Thief

Kailyn has developed a new habit of getting into the cereal cabinet and getting out the boxes of cereal. She then proceds to sit on the floor and eat right out of the box, like there's nothing wrong with that. It's a good thing she's so stinkin' cute!
